COVID 19 update

Dear Patients,

We all have reason to be hopeful, as vaccines for COVID 19 are now being distributed in our community.  The hospital is prepared and in good shape, with a decreasing number of COVID patients and better treatments and understanding of the disease than last winter. We will all breathe easier when the most vulnerable have been vaccinated and life returns to normal.  This too, will pass.

This virus will likely be with us for a while, and we will have to learn to live our normal lives despite it, to care for the ill, to use common sense and to move past fear and reclaim our way of life.

My staff and I are committed to caring for you in a healthy environment, paying attention to both physical and mental health needs during the isolation of the time.  I urge you to tend to your preventative care and health screenings, keep exercising, and maintain your social connections and hopeful attitudes.

As I inquire about my patients' pandemic experiences, I continually marvel at the resourcefulness, the adaptability, the optimism, and the courage with which many have faced this year's challenges.  Many have even found some silver linings in new ways of living and working.  I learn something new from you all every day and I am grateful for that.  I am also grateful for the new babies that constantly remind us of hope for the future, while getting me out of bed at 3 a.m.

I wish you all the most meaningful of holidays, a Merry Christmas, and a happy 2021.

---Joann M. Smith, M.D.
